The first international cricket was played in 1999 when they hosted group matches for the cricket world cup. The first one day international played there was in 2000. It has only hosted 4 test matches since then, with the opposition being Zimbabwe in 2003, Bangladesh in 2005 and West Indies in 2007 and 2009.
The first Durham player to hit a century on their home ground was Paul Collingwood who hit a 100 in 2007.

The ground is still being updated latest plans include floodlights, and extending the county durham stand. This will mean the whole ground is permanent seating and will raise the capacity to 20,000. The development will include a new hotel, and club shop. These developments were need to maintain test match status.
