England Ashes Squad 2010 announced
September 23rd, 2010 · News
The Ashes team Announcement has been made today. England has announced their squad to take on Australia in the Ashes later this year. The English cricket team for the 2011 ashes apart from the inclusion of Chris Tremlett and Monty Panesar, there are no major surprises in the 16-member squad. England will play Australia in the five Test match Ashes series from November 25 this year.
The England Ashes Squad 2010, which will be led by Andrew Strauss has seven batsmen, two wicket-keepers, five pace bowlers and two spinners. Alastair Cook will continue to open the innings with Strauss despite his travails at the crease in recent times, while Ian Bell makes a return to the squad after overcoming his foot fracture.
Kevin Pietersen is selected in the side as expected, while Eoin Morgan, Paul Collingwood and Jonathon Trott complete the line-up.
Matt Prior will be the main wicket-keeper, with Steven Davies to back him up, while the pace bowling department will comprise of James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Steven Finn and Tim Bresnan apart from Tremlett. Graeme Swann will partner Panesar as the only two spinners in the squad.
The English selector, Geoff Miller complimented Davies’ glovework and hence justified his selection, while praising Panesar’s efforts to regain his form and said, “Monty deserves his opportunity to assume the role as England’s second spinner behind Graeme Swann.”
There was no place for the likes of Ravi Bopara – who had featured in the previous Ashes – and Ajmal Shahzad, James Tredwell or Graham Onions. While Bopara’s form has been a bit of a suspect, seniority and experience were the reasons for Shahzad and Tredwell’s exclusion. Onions was ruled out of the Ashes due to his injury issues, which will take another six months to heal.
The 16-member Performance Squad has also been named and they will be in Australia during the same time, playing some matches against the Australian equivalent. They will also act as a back-up to the English squad in case someone breaks down. Opening bat Michael Carberry, wicket-keeper Craig Kieswetter and Tredwell are all a part of this squad.
English Squad for the Ashes:
Andrew Strauss (captain), Alastair Cook, James Anderson, Ian Bell, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood, Steven Davies, Steven Finn, Eoin Morgan, Monty Panesar, Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior, Graeme Swann, Chris Tremlett, Jonathan Trott

Ashes Preview 2010 2011
September 19th, 2010 · Preview
The much vaunted and awaited Ashes series between Australia and England is only days away and calling the favourites is difficult. The five Test match series will start from the last week of November this year at Brisbane and will culminate into a finale at the Sydney Cricket Ground in the new year.
England have their hands on the urn which they had regained from the Aussies, but given their record in Australia since 1987, it will be a tough call to put them as favourites to retain it. In the last 23 years that the two sides have played against each other, England has won only two series – in 2005 and 2009 – and both have been at home. The last time England was in Australia, they had been whitewashed 5-0.
The other factor going against the English side is that their talisman cricketer, and often a one-man army against the Australian side, Andrew Flintoff has announced his retirement. And with this announcement, the teeny-weeny outside chance of him making a comeback for the Ashes has disappeared.
Not that the Australian side has remained as clinical as it did in the past. The retirements of the greats and consistent injuries to the next-generation cricketers have dented the Aussies to an extent. They did beat Pakistan, West Indies and New Zealand in seven of the eight Test matches, but it is not so much the wins, but the games that they have lost which may be the cause for concern.
The loss to England in the T20 World Cup final and the subsequent ODI loss to the same side could have acted as a blow. But the question that everyone is asking is whether too much should be read into the Australian defeats in a format of the game which is different from the Tests.
England will need their openers to fire in Australia, apart from expecting the pace bowlers to bowl as effectively as the helpful conditions back home. For Australia, spin is a worry – both while facing and delivering and that could peg them back a little. However, the Australian surfaces do not assist spin as much as the English side would like and that, to an extent, blunts the likes of Graeme Swann.
Australia could just be favourites this Ashes, but it could be a lot closer than the last time England was in Australia. And exciting!
